Text on the postcard:
There’s an old sitcom, maybe you remember it. It’s a guy and his Indian wife, recently married, who go to live in England, and for a bunch of reasons end up renting from his sister. They live in a flat with a bunch of wacky neighbours, the always quarreling couple downstairs, the Irish guy upstairs. And then, his parents say they’re moving in to the flat as well, one big happy family?! You don’t remember it? No? Hmm.. perhaps.. wait! It wasn’t on TV! This is my life, right now!!
My parents have moved in for a couple of months. They used to live here, and we usurped them. It caused a couple of weeks of chaos as we cleared out cupboards to make room for our stuff from the USA, which was still a lot despite our attempts to pare down to the bare minimum. The weeks leading to their arrival have been spent in major re-configuration mode, trying to set up the spare room to be comfortable. I don’t doubt that there will be some moments of high farce with the four of us here knocking elbows in this space, and thankfully there are postcards for me to vent my frustrations onto.
This card must have been bought in the early ’90s, when I was a student in Paris. That sounds so good doesn’t it, when I was a student in Paris? I should have been smoking gitanes and becoming existential. Mostly I was just young and stupid, but Paris was a good place to be both of those things.
