Postcard reads:
“Work has dried up,” said the man driving the van. “I hadn’t got a call for work since last Tuesday. Until yours, of course.” I couldn’t doubt the truth of his words although I had had trouble finding someone who wasn’t booked up to help us move the furniture from my flat to my sister’s. “Maybe there’s more work around here,” I suggested. “Perhaps if you advertised on this side of town.” He liked that idea. “In Hounslow there are too many moving vans.” Later that week I spotted a headline in one of the free morning papers handed out to commuters, this one focusing on financial matters – Slide in market slashes bonuses by a third, which to the people on the bonus-receiving end probably seems like an injustice, but I hope I can be forgiven for shedding few tears for them. Maybe they’ll have to move from their mansions, and I hope the man with the van will be there to help them.
