Missive #45 – Human Sacrifice

sent from: Waterloo Station, London, UK destination: Hollywood, California, USA

Today I heard about the firing of someone at an ex-employer, someone I thought had been in favour with the regime there. The arbitrary ways that people were hired and fired reminds one of the kinds of political manouevrings that occur in only two places – dictatorships, and high school. One day you’re popular and the next – thwack. That’s what made working there a daily chore; keeping track of everyone – waiting for you to get the axe – and the paranoia and fear that was created makes me realise how susceptible and lizard-brain we all really are. It’s in sharp relief to my current situation – it is “just a job” in the best sense of the word.

This is another postcard in the series from Mexico City in 1997.
