Missive #46 – Mañana de Pascua

sent from: Waterloo Station, London, UK. destination: North Potomac, Maryland, USA

I know the painting on this card as “On The Road To Damascus” but I think that is more a memory misfire than accurate recall. The actual title is “Easter Morning”, and there’s nothing explicit in the image to suggest a religious scene [which is one reason I like it – JL]. The hazy, diffuse light with the sun is perfectly evocative of a kind of half-light (even though the sun is high in the sky, making one wonder if it’s the setting moon). A quick search of the museum’s website confirms that it is supposed to be the moon – this card looks more reddish-orange than the actual painting. I love the tall foreground budding trees, suggesting new life and post-winter renewal. I always wonder about the figures in the mid-and-background – who are they, what are they doing? Not sure why they captivate me more than the foreground. As you can see from the corners, this card adorned my walls for many years.
