The Winter of ’47 Down The Green by Pat Ingoldsby.
I remember how you made the village
so deep and beautiful
I stood looking out the window
and married you with my eyes.
Here’s the complete poem
I remember you snow
the silence you put across the village
made a buzzing sound like quiet amazement
I remember you higher than the step
heavy against the door
I remember you lighter than a sneeze
I remember how you hid the village green
and the lane beside it
so deep
you showed us half a hedge
the top of a pump
and hid everything lower than the windowsill
Nobody could take a horse and cart up New Street
nobody would even try.
Nobody could see the waters of the estuary
a dark and heavy grey had filled it up
between The Island and the village green
an immensity of grey and nothing more
I remember you snow
you put chilblains on the edges of our ears
and confused our feet with hidden pavements.
I remember how you made the village
so deep and beautiful
I stood looking out the window
and married you with my eyes.
