This is the first sketch that I had no real-life inspiraton for, which is probably why it’s taken longer to find shape. I stated with a nose, and built from there. When I got to the body I wanted to explore a non-standing straight pose, and then got into the wrinkles. The face as almost comically stretched, a large chin making him Max Von Sydow-ish, before I reshaped the jaw at Maria’s suggestion into something more coherent. I struggled to find something for his head ~ not sure this colonial-explorer hat makes much sense, but I feel it gives him a sense of purpose. His mouth was downturned for a long time but now there’s a hint of a smile, an explorer looking on a new discovery.
