In Madrid today, some of the following happened; a woman jumped the queue in the post office; a civil servant almost found cause to deny someone what they had waited 3 months for; a nanny comforted her crying charge as it had become entangled between two small dogs playing; a woman rode a Brompton bike through Plaza Olavide; an old man ate ice cream, eyes closed; men worked to construct or possibly demolish, parts of the city; a tourist was overcharged for croquetas; people at a post office found everything they needed except a letter box; two men on a motorbike rode past the Prado; a man took photos and wrote postcards.
Who is the woman in the painting on the postcard supposed to be? She's lovely.
I should have done my research first, it would have made for an interesting tale.
It is Saint Catherine of Alexandria. She seemed like an interesting figure, notable for being martyred, sentenced to death first on the wheel (read up about the wheels of torture, it's grim stuff), but it broke under her touch, so they went with a simpler off-with-her-head approach.
As it said in the book we just finished reading – “The wheel turned. Simon turned with it.”
