I live in the UK, but I pay for a storage unit in Los Angeles. Clearly what is in there is not stuff I need. It’s tempting to point to this as a symptom of our overstuffed, wasteful lives, but what is there is genuine archive stuff – old photos, journals, some toys, artifacts of my childhood. Nothing that most people I know wont admit to keeping in their parent’s attic/basement, or in a garage somewhere. At some point, and I hope that point is soon, I want to bring it to wherever I am now. I had to get rid of a lot of things, precious things, such as the books that Terry Brooks signed for me in the early ’90s when he was on a book tour. I’d never met an author before, certainly never had one sign a book for me – it was a precious moment and I kept those books with me for years until, reluctantly, I had to admit that I had to let someone else enjoy them. When I arrived in the UK, I borrowed those same books from the library, and re-read them.
