Out for a run in a hilly Seattle suburb, houses crowded between the christmas pine trees grown far too big to fit into any human’s living room. The trail goes offroad into a steep park and into the trees where wet pine-fronds grasp at my face. It is a setting for a million crime novels and thrillers; a wood, a lake, humans, darkness. It’s supposed to be full daylight but before long I can see as much as at the deepest dusk. Turn around.
