We saw Hitchcock’s “Rear Window” at the BFI as part of their Hitchcock season. I’ve seen it a couple of times before but it’s interesting how the big screen completely re-shapes your experience – the frame is so full of life, especially in the glimpse of the main street which makes you believe this is a real New York scene. The use of only diegetic music and sound – meaning that which originates from the scene instead of an orchestra playing music to heighten tension – it puts you there in that hot apartment, confined with Jimmy Stewart, experiencing the world only as it comes to him through the window. And Grace Kelly. Oh, Grace Kelly. She’s just so damn sexy, in that old movie star, pure charisma way. Their relationship had more emotional complexity than I remembered, and how it makes them both realise the common ground they share on which they might build a relationship going forward. Amazing stuff.
