The Japanese man had his head in his hands. He was weeping, sitting in a wheelchair. A few feet away, other men in wheelchairs looked at him. Some were smiling, others laughing at him. I knew all of them were Japanese because it was written in big letters on their shirts. They had just played and won a basketball match – game? – against a team from Italy. It was a tough game, brutal at times, as they gave each other no purchase. As the winners celebrated, they hugged each other so hard their chairs tipped forward and they fell forward in a heap onto the court, before righting themselves, going to the next teammate, and repeating the topple. Head in his hands, he sat crying with joy.
