Saw “Avengers” today (I refuse to call it “Marvel’s Avengers Assemble”). I liked it, a good bit of popcorn fun from one of my favourite artists ~ Joss Whedon. I’m not a huge fan of comic book movies per se ~ I was raised on European comic book tradition rather than the US obsession with super heroes and the like. The effects were astonishing, I thought, but went by so fast it was hard to take it all in. I read later in more detail what was done and had to wonder as I often do – “was it really worth it?” Sometimes the things we focus on as VFX artists become more about obsession than story-telling need. What I could catch of the credits revealed many old colleagues and friends. I was forced to confront the same emotions as I expressed recently in missive #276 ~ namely, I’ll never be at the top, and would I want to be if I could?
