In Muir Beach, a small community on the California coast, they celebrate Guy Fawkes Day. Just after the sun sets on Nov 5th, a small procession with an effigy of Guy Fawkes leaves the village pub and makes its way to the beach. They are accompanied by music, I think, either a drum or maybe more. A large bonfire, taller than a man, has been made on the beach. Guy is put on the bonfire, some words are spoken, and the fire is lit, sending embers up into the night. Bagpipes are played, a few people perform a Morris dance, and fire dancers perform, describing filligrees in the air. It is a kind of general UK-cultural celebration via Californian inclusiveness. No fireworks are lit, alas, that is illegal. We bring toffee apples and beer and feel the fire on our faces, so close to singeing.
This is the first card that is going to someone I do not know. Welcome, Jackie, I hope you like it!
