Went to a fantastic talk given by Simon Watney, an artist, critic and photography lecturer. I enjoyed how he married film, writing, sculpture, history and photography together – got me thinking about those different aspects and how I do not like to be pigeonholed. Also, in talking about photographs that he collects, mostly of men, gay men, either alone or in couples, he asked a question that has opened my eyes to why certain pictures, artwork, films, designs, books appeal to me, or repel me, or offend me… the question is:
WHO DOES THIS PHOTOGRAPH THINK I AM?
This has unleashed a torrent of ideas, but it’s late and they’ll have to be written about another day.
I like this one from blake a great deal. All great work is a mirror for those who are willing to look. That's my answer to who this thinks I am.
Hi Elizabeth,
I love that insight, it was unexpected.
Would you like a postcard? I'd be happy to send you one… send me your address!
Best,
Juan-Luis
