In the shadow of the Norman Castle I slept. It was built in the late 11th century, not long after William’s invasion of Southern England in 1066. I lay on a small knoll where the outer walls would have stood, now mostly reclaimed by the earth. The family that built this once claimed much of England and Wales as their own, and doubtless they believed their supremacy absolute and unchanging. Only one wall of the outer gatehouse remained, tall above me. Spiders roamed the grass, which I lay on and blessed with my breath.
