Between Claygate and Esher there’s a section of the road where the wind from the adjacent fields blows unimpeded by the houses. There are fewer street lights here, so it is always darker. The first thing you feel is a chill. It is always at least 5 degress colder than anywhere else. Darkness, and cold. On November evenings like the other night, a low mist rises just here also, making it hard to see. We ride into the mist, feeling its cold, mysterious embrace. When we emerge on the other side, I always expect to have been transported in space or time to a different reality, Narnia-wardrobe like, from our world. If we do, I’ll be sure to send a postcard.
