As a kid, all I knew of Harry Belafonte was the “Deee O” song and a couple others that would get my mother singing and dancing. Only later, in America, did I learn about his humanitarian work and involvement with the civil rights movement.
I was listening today to an interview with him on the publication of his new book and it reminded me of two concerts I went to with Naomi, to hear him sing and tell his stories. He was so graceful, funny, amazing to listen to. I remember these times and miss my friend on the side of the world. It is also impossible to separate these good memories from watching The Muppet Show episode with Naomi that had Harry Belafonte as a guest start. (aside – “The Muppets” doesn’t come out here until Feb 2012 – grrrr). That episode closes with a song that always makes me cry, seeing Harry & all the Muppets singing together. In the intro, Harry says, “.. all of us are here for a very very short time, and in that time that we’re here, there really isn’t any difference in any of us, if we were to take the time out to understand each other, and the question is, do I know who you are, do you know who I am, do we care about each other, ‘cos if we do, we can turn the world around.”
